Coconut- The Tree of Life
I can’t begin to count the number of times I have been made to sit and listen to some conspiracy theory revolving around the demonization of coconut in the
A quick conversation with anyone who believes in his or her bush medicine, will leave you quite convinced that there are a number of plants/trees which can tackle any ailment on earth. The coconut tree- the emblem of the
As far as bush medicine goes, the two main products of coconut getting most of the love are the “coconut water” and the by-product- coconut oil. Inside a coconut is the “water”. This is different from coconut milk- which is produced by grating the kernel of a mature/ “dry coconut” and mixing it with warm water. Coconut water is considered great for the restoration of energy and vigor. And, there are some peope who will make you understand that coconut water, especially that from a young coconut, is what kidneys need and what urinary disorders fear.
And just so you know, these same people will also let you know that coconut water does not jest with hypertension. Coconut milk, on the other hand, as well as the hardened kernel, can be used as a mild laxative. I have…yet…to …try that.
The coconut oil- a product I have promised myself to attempt making before this month is through- has many uses. I remember folks would use it as a hair oil. In fact, from time to time, I still treat my hair with coconut oil. Many claim that coconut oil is the best conditioner/hair treatment, promoting healthy hair growth and strengthening hair. I remember watching relatives of mine, massaging the oil into their scalp and hair, leaving it on overnight ,and then washing it out the next day.
I also remember when folks would take to using coconut oil as a lotion or adding it to a commercial lotion. They would preach that coconut oil promotes soft, smooth and clear skin. Indeed, isn’t that what some commercial skincare products preach to us also?
The oil is also used externally to treat/prevent sunburn and was considered mighty fierce in combating cracked heels (apply it before bedtime), dry/chapped lips, symptoms of eczema, insect bites and relieving minor skin irritations.
