The style X-change: I'm so blue.. over you!
It would appear that, as of late, the colour blue has had a bit of a renaissance. Well, it has for me anyway. I'm in love with the damn thing! At the moment my favourite is Electric blue (the shade in the picture below). Something about the colour seems to radiate a certain glow from whoever wears it. It's a shade that seems to work on anyone!

Recently, I have even seen this shade moving more intently within the makeup arena. Remember Eve's video for "Tambourine"? Well she rocked a very strong eye in that vid, using an electric blue shade. I think I recall hearing it was to do with a Mac range which she was helping to promote.
Anyhoo, I was quite intrigued by the look since I own a palette with two very striking blue tones, and I was quite intrigued as to how I could incorporate them into my own make-up looks. I did a little search on the internet to see what types of blue eye looks there were and was first met by this scary little sight! certainly not the look I was going for!

Anyway a little more searching led me to a picture of UK rapper/singer Estelle and Bajan beauty Rihanna. Both have used a a different approach to the blue makeup, but, both are pretty easily achieved given a bit of time patience and some creativity!

Estelle's look is a full on blue blow out while Rihanna's look is a tad more subdued, albeit because her lips are so bold. It seems the key is one or the other. If the lips are bold, it's better to keep the eyes relatively neutral. But if the eyes are bold, a bold lip will only serve to make the wearer appear clownish!
Estelle's look inspired me, so I did a little experiment. I first applied a base of Groundwork paint pod by Mac to the eye. Then began to apply the first electric blue shade in my Prescriptives holiday eye and cheek palette. Unfortunately, they no longer make it which is a massive shame, but I think it is called Colbalt. I applied that to the inner 2/3rds of my eyelids, up to the crease. Then, I used a darker blue, more of a navy/nightshade type of tone and applied that to the outer third of my eye. You could apply tape to the outer corner of your eye to make it a precise shape but since I was only messing about that little detail seemed less important.
I liked the effect, it seemed to brighten my eyes, and pretty much lifted them to, making them appear wider. I applied eyeliner, making it wing out at the corner. I also applied a highlight under my brow bone, using Mac's mineralise skinfinish in Medium plus (lighter than my colour so good for highlighting) and applied a healthy dose of mascara to finish. Below is the result.
