The Style X-change: It's all about the little things

So, when I returned from NYC,  I had a decision to make. I had clearly shopped, but with space being such a limited commodity in my wardrobe, a clear out was NECESSARY. I like to think that when I have been blessed with an opportunity to shop and purchase new things, it is a good gesture to give back.
This past weekend I did just that. I cleared out my wardrobe, and now I have around 7 bags of no longer needed clothes, and accessories which I can take to the charity shop, and/or shelter, knowing that they will be of use to someone less fortunate than myself.
So what remains?
Well I wouldn't claim a capsule wardrobe, but it certainly is a more organised variation of the theme. Since we're heading into winter, it has a vast selection of sweaters and cardigans, in a wide variety of colours, an abundance of leggings (great to wear with boots and a sweater dress... an easy outfit), a few pairs of jeans, a couple of jersey dresses, and the usual basics like vests and t-shirts in various colours and designs.
My aim over the next few months is to buy as few clothes as possible. But, how do I keep it fresh and interesting in the meantime? All the small things. Accessories are what take a hairstyle, an outfit or an object, up a notch to the next level. Accessories (and the way in which you put them together, help to exhibit your personality; help make something all "your own"- giving that something your own distinctive style.
I'm not one to follow trends to the letter, I like what works for me in that tried and tested capacity, hence my obsession with Khaki (I will wear it year in and year out- it just so happens year after year designers incorporate militaria into their collections!) Anyway, with accessories you can easily incorporate a element of a trend into your wardrobe without going overboard.
In a way I'm kind of looking at my wardrobe with the same eyes that Indian born designer Sheena Matheiken did (to a lesser degree) where she wore the same dress for a year for charity and just changed her look through accessories.

I'm inspired, so over the next few weeks I'm starting my own little project. I'm going to invest in a cheap(ish) black dress, a simple cut with very little embellishment and wear it once a week with varying accessories. This will be a lesson in creativity. A test to see how many different looks I can come up with, using one staple item, a few choice accessories, creative use of make up etc.

I encourage our other Mane Re:Belles to try out this project also, and see what they can come up with. Feel free to send us some pics at the usual address ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )!
